The Environment

Environment-

The living organisms do not live in isolation. They obtain their food and other necessities from their surroundings. All the living and non living things in the surroundings affects the life of an organism. Everything surrounding and affecting the life of an organism is called its environment. Environment is made up of two components : biotic(living) and abiotic(non living).

Biotic components-

Living things like plants and animals are called biotic components. Biotic components are those that have life. Plants, animals, scavengers and decomposers are biotic components.

  • Plants:- Leaves are green because they contain a green pigment called chlorophyll. The process by which green plants make their own food using carbon dioxide and water in the presence of light and chlorophyll is called photosynthesis.
  • Animals:-Animals cannot make their own food so they are called heterotrophs. Both plants and animals need substances called nutrients.Plants absorb nutrients from the soil and these nutrients enter the bodies of animals when they eat plants and flesh of other animals.
  • Decomposers : These are the microorganisms which help in the breakdown of food material and convert it into the simpler forms so that it get mixed with the soil. Bacteria, fungi etc. are known as decomposers.
  • Scavangers : Organisms that feed on the dead remains of animals that are killed by predators are called as scavangers. Kites and vultures are some examples of scavangers.
  •  Abiotic components :

These are the non - living components of the environment. These include wind, rain, temperature, climate, soil, sunlight etc.  No organism can live independently. In any habitat, plants and animals depend on each other and non living component of the environment. This is known as interdependence. Because of interdependance, plants and animals help maintain a balance in nature.
